MBA Online Classes (Master of Business Administration)
College Online Class Degree Program by Distance Learning Education
I am currently at a serious crossroads and am having difficulty deciding whether or not to drop out of my master’s program. Need input from people that don’t have an agenda with me.
Facts:
1. I’ve been married 8 years, coupled 14 years with same person.
2. My husband is no longer willing to tough it out.
3. I’ve been in school for 6 years now, working both full time and part time.
4. My advisor just dropped a huge bomb; our funding source has decided to not renew the research grant.
5. I decided on taking the position based on the false pretense that I’d be funded throughout on a research assistantship.
6. I have to pay my own tuition (not a free ride). If I don’t have an assistantship, I have to pay out of state tuition as well.
7. I have been loosely offered a teaching assistantship to get me through the second year.
8. The first semester, I moved to start school alone. I was flying home once a month to try to maintain relationship.
9. Found out on winter leave that my husband was involved with another woman. He ended the affair and moved with me.
10. He resents me for having to leave his friends and family and for being in school for so long. Now he wants to go back home.
11. I’m exhausted with all of the demands. I put in about 60 hours a week with classes, seminars, work, and I still take it home with me. It requires all of my focus and time, leaving little room for anything else.
12. My advisor is great, the research is great, but I’m being torn in two directions.
13. I’m suffering from insomnia, and have started seeing a doctor. She put me on anti-anxiety meds.
14. I have huge student loan debt.
15. A huge part of me just wants to go back to working full time where I’m actually making a living wage and a matching contribution, and getting back to the people who are most important in my life.
16. At this point, the only reason I’m considering sticking it out is because I started. I’ve never quit anything before in my life.
17. Having stated #16, I did commit to my husband before I committed to grad school.
18. We were seemingly in agreement about this arrangement in the beginning. Now he is being forthcoming about how much he “hates that school” and all of the subsequent resentment.
19. No matter what I decide, I lose something. It’s hard to determine which I will regret the most. I do believe though that having people in your life that love and care for you make for a happier life than having great achievements and ambition.
20. Being successful doesn’t neccessarily equate to happiness.
21. School has been a huge financial and time investment. I want to make something of it.
22. I have considered dropping this program (science MS) for a MBA, which can all be done online. This could couple nicely with the Geology undergrad degree that I have, and allow me to go back to the “real working world” in the meantime. I could get this done in as little as 18 months or take up to 5 years.
23. Despite all of my research involvements, field work, publications, and professional meeting presentations, I am hitting the glass ceiling as a woman…a whole other story. I can accept this to some degree; it is traditionally a white male upper-middle class field. Not pulling the gender card. Just making the point that while I’m busy trying to prove myself, I am losing what’s important to me, and I’m questioning whether it’s truly worth the frustration and loss.
24. Women seem to have more success in business degrees. With an MBA, my odds of getting into consulting and management may be better. Not sure though.
25. I believe people are too quick to divorce these days.
