My brother and I had ups and downs but were always close. This is a long story so I’ll just put it down in point form to make it easier to read:
1. Bro and I live three hours apart and used to always spend long weekends etc visiting each other and staying with each other. When SIL moved in, she would invite me to visit but always tell me to get a hotel and never book the guest suite in their building (40.00 per night in stead of 100.00+ for a hotel).
2. Bro told me he was bringing her to my city (it’s way bigger) on a shopping trip to propose. I left work early and spent 200.00 on a bottle of champange, Godiva chocolates etc to leave at their hotel while they were out for dinner so that they would be waiting when they got back. We all went out the next night too.
3. I was asked to be in the wedding party and invited to a bridal show in their city. I was told that they don’t like overnight guests and that I should book a hotel for two nights instead. I couldn’t really afford it but I went anyhow. Bro made snide remarks about how I should stay somewhere nicer (where SIL’s mom and sister stayed) and wash my car more often (I just drove on slushy winter highways).
4. I met someone amazing and we moved in together. Bro and SIL were mad becasue he’s divorced with two kids and had the same job that I did (not anything “better”). They tried really hard to break us up and pulled some really awful stunts that included lying to our mom about us.
5. They invited me to their Mexico wedding and told me that I had to come alone because they had said too many mean things about my guy to people and didn’t want it to get back to him. When they realized that I was not going to go on a week long vacation without my guy, they invited him too and changed their resort to one that would cost double and then told us that the deposits were due in three weeks. Obviously we could not afford to go and I was really sad but bro said that he understood and didn’t want us to use savings to come.
6. Bro and my guy (we got engaged) finally met and hit it off. The two of them planned a weekend for all of us and it went really well. When we left, bro hugged my guy and welcomed him to the family. Then he texted him a lot and said how glad he would be to have him as a brother.
7. My guy asked bro to be a groomsman and bro said that he would have to get back to him on that. I knew that SIL in law was in class and so I couldn’t call her right then. I sent her a text saying that I knew asking by text was tacky but that I would love her to be a bridesmaid and wanted her to hear it from me. She didn’t reply and bro texted me later saying that what I had done was extremely tacky. He called two days later saying that they didn’t want to “do the work that being in a wedding requires as we couldn’t even bother to show up to theirs”.
8. Bro started posting mean things about me on FB and gossipping about me and my guy with our mom. They found information about someone with a similar name as his online regarding bankruptcy and wage garnishment and decided that my guy lies to me. (It wasn’t him.)
My brother has been a jerk and he and his wife like to snoop into other people’s lives. They know email passwords for friends accounts and they read their emails and online dating profiles. They use FB to creep on people and they are really mean to anyone who they think is below them. My brother used to like to bug people but he was never mean like this before. We had a huge fight a couple of months ago and haven’t spoken since. What makes people act this way’ Would you be insecure if you were marrying a man who was close with his sister’
